During the regional tastings “Ucovin” and “Evaluación de los Vinos de la Zona Norte” (Evaluation of the Wines from the Northern Region) performed last week in Mendoza, the excellent quality of the 2010 wines was demonstrated
25 wineries presented 80 of the best 2010 wines, 15 of them were selected during the last UCOVIN, a technical tasting of the wines from the Uco Valley region of Mendoza. The event was carried out last week at the facilities of Bobadilla family’s trout farm.
The tasting was organized by the INTA Rural Extension and Development units of La Consulta, Tupungato and Tunuyán, with the support of business organizations, the town councils of San Carlos, Tunuyán and Tupungato, as well Fondo Vitivinícola de Mendoza (Mendoza Wine Fund).
Moreover, the tasting gathered more than 850 attendees, who had the chance to taste the best varietals, as well as some blends of the region.
As regards white wines, the tasted samples were: Semillón, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Chardonnay.
Red varieties were the most praised wines. The tasted wines were four Malbec and one sample of the following varieties: Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Bonarda, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot. A blend made up of 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Malbec and 20% Bonarda achieved one of the highest average scores: 90 points.
The average scores
The blind tasting set an average score for all wines between 87 and 91 points. The highest scores were for a Malbec and a Cabernet Sauvignon, while white wines got average scores between 87 and 88 points.
The wineries of the region that presented their wines were Familia Giaquinta, Portillo, Finca Sophenia, Cooperativa San Carlos Sud, O. Fournier, Esmeralda, Aconquija, Coop. Tupungato, Finca La Celia, Laureano Gómez, Darío Coletto, Los Parrales, Laderas de Los Andes, Bodegas San Polo, Altocedro, Héctor Meli, Estancia Mendoza, Coop. La Riojana, Alcázar, Familia De Marchi, Escuela Julia Silva de Cejas, Flechas de Los Andes, Jean Bousquet, Vigneti La Arboleda and Zorzal Wines.
