In last weeks’ Wine Spectator Insider, the journalist James Molesworth suggested 14 Argentinian wines, including two "hot wines."
In last weeks’ reports, James Molesworth offered reviews of outstanding Malbec and Malbec-based blends from Mendoza and Patagonia. He recommended wines from several Argentinian wineries such as Alta Vista, Trapiche, Altocedro, Trivento, Achával Ferrer, Cruz and Bodega Noemía de Patagonia, located in the southernmost winemaking region on the continent.
The wines that got 90 points were Malbec Luján de Cuyo Andina 2007 (Cruz) and A Lisa Río Negro Valley 2009 (Bodega Noemía de Patagonia). They are dark and ripe red wines in the price range between 20 and 25 dollars.
Then, with 91 points, Molesworth recommended five Malbec from Mendoza. They are Alta Vista’s Malbec Luján de Cuyo Alizarine 2007 and Malbec Luján de Cuyo Serenade 2007 (USD 50), Trapiche’s Malbec Mendoza Viña Adolfo Ahumada 2007 and Malbec Mendoza Viña Domingo F. Sarmiento 2007 (USD 48), and Achával Ferrer’s Malbec Mendoza 2009 (USD 25).
Two wines got 92 points: Malbec Uco Valley Temis 2007 from Alta Vista and J. Alberto Río Negro Valley 2009 from Bodega Noemía de Patagonia. Both are in the price segment between 45 and 50 dollars and the journalist advised consumers to drink them now through 2013.
Furthermore, three Malbec from Mendoza achieved 93 points. Trapiche’s Malbec Mendoza Viña Fausto Orellana de Escobar 2007 is a ripe and vivid wine available at 48 dollars. Malbec La Consulta Gran Reserva 2007, from Altocedro, is a very dark and juicy Malbec at 50 dollars. Finally, Trivento’s Malbec Luján de Cuyo Eolo 2007 is a very refined wine available at 79 dollars.
“Hot wines”
In last weeks’ reports, James Molesworth selected two Argentinian wines as “hot wines”. These are high-scoring, low-production wines from around the world that may be difficult to find, but are worth seeking out.
Argentinia’s hot wines are Alto Mendoza 2007 (Alta Vista) and Río Negro Valley 2008 (Bodega Noemía de Patagonia). The first one got 94 points; it has a production of 1,572 cases and is available at 80 dollars. The second one achieved 95 points and just 75 cases were imported; it is available at 105 dollars.
