EMBLEMATIC ARGENTINE VINES | Malbeck - Torrontés
MALBECK
Even though it is known in different winegrowing countries by the name of Cot, in Argentina its common name is Malbeck or “French grape”. According to different authors it would be original from the area Quercy y de Cahors (France). It was introduced in the middle of last century by Aimé M. Pouget because it could adapt very well, especially to the foothill area irrigated by the waters of the Mendoza River. Its growth was amazing because its surface reached more than 50.000 hectares. Vineyards of this variety constitute a particular agro-ecosystem because they were grown with a high density (5.500 plants per hectare), driven by low vines that are 1.5 meters tall with three wires with Guyot trimming, double bordelaise modification, superficial irrigation and in a slope. Wines produced from these grapes make out for a typified product that created the first argentine name: Luján de Cuyo. Malbeck is a not a very plastic vine, it is demanding on ecologic conditions and on handling the vineyard and it does not reproduces its wine goodness in all the regions.
In reference to the weather, it requires wide thermal amplitude with cool nights. It is more sensitive than the Cabernet Sauvignon to high temperatures at night. Talking about temperatures during the day, the ideal is that
the maximum average doesn’t go over the 30 C within the grape ripeness months. When the temperature goes over this value it decreases the intensity of the colorants and the total polifenoles.
You can find these weather conditions in some regions of Mendoza and it would be one of the main causes of the great popularity of this province.
Organic wise it is characterised by an intense colour with purple touches. The most characteristic aroma would be plum, red berries, ink, and anise.
Sometimes it presents some herbal notes generally when the grape comes from unbalanced vines. Wine management should have as a goal eliminating this vegetal characteristic that can be associated to ripe taste and a fast evolution of the wine.
It is suitable for the making of pink wines, taking advantage of their fruity characteristic. On the mouth it is distinguished by soft tannins and a slightly sweet flavour. It ages very well and it is flatter by aging it on casks.
Even though Malbeck wine has become the typical argentine red wine it is necessary to come to a consensus with regulations for its making, as grape ripeness, time of maceration, aging time on casks and on the bottles. Also in the wine industry it is important to find the right vineyard management. It is also necessary to define the characteristics of the Malbeck wines produced from different clones.
Development of the TORRONTÉS
The wine originally from the Torrontés Riojano is a known varietal, produced only in Argentina. In general aspect the wine is white, very aromatic, of a wild palate, sometimes with a slight semi-bitter aftertaste, lowly alcoholic and with good acidity. The fine varietals white wine, elaborated with modern technology has obtained several awards on national and international contests, considered as a unique wine and typical of Argentine.
At La Rioja, where its name “Torrontés Riojano” comes form, at more than 1350 meters above the sea level, with a yellow greenish bright colour, clear, rose’s aroma,
with a slight peach smell, with strong pineapple and beams of honey, fruity flavours highlight on the palate, it is balanced and dry. There are wines with different characteristics, so it can be elaborated as a young wine, pale colour, greenish, very fruity or also sweet of a salmon colour.
The torrontés riojano, originated from grapes imported from Spain implanted for the first time in Santiago de Estero by the Jesuits and that adapted very well to the characteristic of the soil and weather of La Rioja, has a good development potential and distinguished itself from the one from Salta, San Juan and Mendoza because it is more aromatic and that shows the peculiarity offered by the grape.
The first plantations of the area were set at the end of the 16th century, and nowadays the vineyards from Rioja cover 7.500 hectares, of which 40% are torrontés.
